Jeep Wrangler JK vs JL Seat Covers: What's Different and What Fits Your Year

Posted by Shopify API on

Shopping for Jeep Wrangler seat covers and confused by JK vs JL fitment? You're not alone. The JK (2007-2018) and JL (2018+) are different vehicles with different seat designs, and covers made for one will not fit the other.

Here's what you need to know to get the right covers for your Wrangler.

JK vs JL: The Key Seat Differences

Front Seats

Headrest Adjustable, removable on most trims Integrated (non-removable) on most trims
Side Airbags Some trims — check your specific year Standard on all trims
Recline Mechanism Lever or dial, varies by trim Redesigned lever mechanism
Seat Shape Flatter, simpler bolstering More sculpted, aggressive bolstering
Lumbar Support Manual on some trims Power lumbar available on higher trims

Rear Seats

Feature JK (2007-2018) JL (2018+)
2-Door Config Simple bench, 60/40 fold Redesigned 60/40 fold
4-Door Config 60/40 split, fold and tumble Revised 60/40, easier fold mechanism

LATCH Anchors Yes (child seat) Yes but different locations

Why Universal Covers Don't Work

Both the JK and JL have unique seat contours, headrest designs, and airbag locations. A "universal fit" cover that claims to fit both will:

  • Bag in some areas and stretch tight in others
  • Potentially block side airbag deployment (life safety issue)
  • Not accommodate the different headrest styles
  • Look sloppy compared to custom-fit covers

Always buy covers specifically designed for your generation. Bartact seat covers are made with year-specific patterns that account for every difference between JK and JL seats, including airbag compatibility.

Side Airbag Compatibility — Critical

The JL has standard side airbags in the front seats on all trims. Your seat covers must have sewn-in airbag-compatible seams that break away when the airbag deploys. Covers that don't accommodate airbags can prevent deployment in a crash — this is a serious safety issue, not just a fitment concern.

The JK has side airbags on some trims (typically Sahara and Rubicon after 2012). Check your specific vehicle before ordering.

MOLLE accessories Integration

Both JK and JL owners love MOLLE integration on their seat covers. The seat back panels accept MOLLE pouches and gear bags for organized storage. But the panel size and position differ between generations — JL panels are slightly larger due to the redesigned seat shape.

Material Choice: Same for Both

Whether you're covering a JK or JL, the material considerations are identical:

  • CORDURA® 1000D: The gold standard. Mil-spec nylon that resists tears, UV, and water. This is what Bartact uses — the same fabric the military trusts for gear.
  • Neoprene: Waterproof, stretchy, comfortable. Good for water sports and beach Jeeping. Less abrasion-resistant than CORDURA®.
  • Canvas: Tough and affordable. Handles mud and dirt well. Not as UV-resistant.

How to Find Your Year

Not sure if you have a JK or JL? Check your VIN:

  • JK: VIN starts with 1C4 (or 1J4 for early models). Model years 2007-2018.
  • JL: VIN starts with 1C4. Model years 2018+. The 2018 model year had BOTH JK and JL — if you have a 2018, check the 8th digit of your VIN (J = JK, L = JL).

Bottom Line

JK and JL seat covers are NOT interchangeable. Get the right ones for your generation, make sure they're airbag-compatible, and invest in quality material that can handle the Jeep lifestyle. Browse Bartact's full Wrangler seat cover lineup with options for every JK and JL year and configuration.
