JL vs JLU — Same Handle, Different Positions

The 2-door JL and 4-door JLU use the same bolt-on grab handles at the front A-pillar positions. The JLU also has rear roll bar positions for rear-seat passengers — running a full set means every row has something to hold on to. On a trail with a full crew, that matters.

Bartact Grab Handles: The Original

Bartact invented the aftermarket Jeep grab handle. Before Bartact, off-roaders were improvising — wrapping paracord around bare roll bars, using cargo straps, or just holding on. Bartact engineered the first purpose-built grab handle for Jeep Wrangler, and the product line has expanded to cover every Wrangler generation, Gladiator, Ford Bronco, Toyota Tacoma, and vehicles with removable headrests.

Types of Bartact Grab Handles

Every Bartact grab handle mounts without drilling or permanent modification. Roll bar versions loop and cinch around the bar in under five minutes. Why It Matters on the Trail

Why Grab Handle Quality Matters on the Trail

A grab handle is a safety item before it is an accessory. When your Jeep or Bronco is at angle on a side hill, crossing a rocky section, or dropping into a ledge, the grab handle is what keeps your passenger in their seat instead of against the door. That load is real, and it requires a grab handle built to take it — not a decorative piece of woven cord attached with hardware that was not specified for the application.

The paracord used in hand-woven handles is genuine 550 paracord — the 550 lb tensile strength rating is the specification for the cord itself, not a marketing claim. The polymer handles are injection-molded with hardware rated for the mounting point and the load the handle will see. Both types are built to be grabbed hard, repeatedly, in conditions where the consequence of failure is not aesthetic.

Fitment: Why It Differs Between Wrangler Generations

Jeep Wrangler grab handles mount to the roll bar or to the headrest posts depending on the handle type and the vehicle. Roll bar handles use the existing roll bar structure — the handle loops over the bar and cinches in place. The geometry of this mount varies between JL, JK, and TJ because the roll bar diameter and cross-section differ between generations. A handle sized for a JK roll bar will fit loosely on a JL bar and may not sit properly on a TJ bar. Fitment matters.

Headrest-mount handles use the headrest post holes in the seatback — these are more consistent across vehicles but still vary by vehicle and headrest post diameter. Check the fitment in the product listing before purchasing. The fitment listed is accurate and is based on the actual vehicle geometry, not an approximation.

Paracord vs Polymer — Choosing the Right Type

Paracord grab handles have a textured woven surface that provides excellent grip in all conditions — wet hands, muddy gloves, driving gloves. The woven construction also makes them more visually customizable; Bartact offers multiple color combinations. Each handle is hand-woven at Bartact's US facility, one at a time, which means genuine 550 paracord throughout and consistent weave tension. UV-stabilized outer sheath so the cord does not degrade or stiffen after outdoor exposure.

Polymer grab handles are injection-molded with a rubber-grip overmold surface. Cleaner, more factory appearance. High grip without the textured paracord surface. Same load rating, different aesthetic. If you want the handle to blend with the factory interior more closely, polymer is the choice. If you want color, grip texture, and the hand-woven character, paracord is the choice. Both types are made in the USA and both are rated for the application.

Installation

Bartact grab handles install without tools in most configurations. Roll bar handles loop over the roll bar and cinch down with a pull. Headrest handles feed through the headrest post holes and secure with a friction lock. No drilling. No permanent modification to the vehicle. Remove them when you want the factory look, reinstall in seconds. The install is designed to be something you can do at the trailhead, not something that requires a shop visit.

Choosing the Right Bartact Grab Handle for Your Vehicle

Bartact makes grab handles for Jeep Wrangler JL, JLU, JK, JKU, TJ, and LJ; Jeep Gladiator; Ford Bronco; Toyota Tacoma; and vehicles with removable headrests. Each handle is listed with the specific vehicle and mount type it was designed for — roll bar mount or headrest mount. Do not assume cross-compatibility between generations. A JL roll bar handle uses JL roll bar dimensions; it will not fit a JK roll bar with the same security.

When choosing between paracord and polymer: paracord if you want grip texture, color options, and the hand-woven character of a US-made product. Polymer if you want a cleaner, more factory look with a rubber overmold grip surface. Both are rated for the load. Both are made in the USA. The difference is aesthetic and tactile, not functional.

Multiple handles per vehicle are common. Front passenger grab handle on the A-pillar or roll bar, rear passenger handles for back seat access, a handle on each side. Grab Handle Safety Ratings and Load Specs

Bartact grab handles are designed for real loads — not decorative accent pieces. The 550 paracord used in hand-woven handles gets its name from the 550 lb tensile strength of the seven inner strands combined. In a grab handle application, the load is distributed across multiple wraps of cord through the weave pattern, not a single strand. The practical load capacity of the assembled handle exceeds the single-strand rating by a meaningful margin. These are handles you grab hard when the vehicle is at angle, and they are rated to take it.

Polymer handles use injection-molded nylon or composite construction with hardware rated for the mounting application. The rubber overmold grip surface provides tactile feedback and grip in wet conditions — gloves on, hands muddy, grip still works. The hardware at the mounting point — the strap, clip, or post attachment — is specified for the load the handle will see in normal use. Not decorative hardware. Working hardware.

Install torque matters. Grab handles that mount with hardware should be checked for tightness after the first few trail runs. Hardware that feels tight on installation can work slightly loose after vibration and thermal cycling. A quick check after the first outing and periodically thereafter keeps the handle secure.
